I heard about Go Code Colorado in 2017 from emails that the FACTORY – a Proximity Space – sends, but I chickened out and did not attend the information meeting. I regretted that decision a lot, so when I heard the roadshow was coming back to the FACTORY in February 2018, I signed up. Even the day that I went, I wanted to back out, but I forced myself to go, and I didn’t regret it.
I arrived at the FACTORY, which is a cool coworking space, in the heart of downtown Grand Junction and went into the event center where they had chairs set up in rows so that you could sit down and listen to the presentation. There were more men than women, and I was surprised to see that all ages were represented. There was catered food sitting on a table in the back of the room, and it looked great with a large selection of beverages nearby.
I got a plate of food and a drink and sat down in a chair next to someone that I didn’t know. The 2018 Go Code Colorado team introduced themselves and explained how the competition was going to work. I had never done anything like this before, so I listened carefully. They let us know we could have a nice Go Code drinking glass if we signed up that night.
I still felt apprehensive because I didn’t know anyone that was there, but I was optimistic that it was something that I wanted to do. I started talking to the guy next to me, Mike, who had competed the year before and encouraged me to sign up (he is now a friend). I then talked to the event organizer and decided to sign up and get my glass.
No matter how nervous you are about attending and signing up for Go Code Colorado, just do it. The local community members that you will meet make it worth it! Plus, you get food and drinks and the company of fascinating people that you might not meet otherwise. It’s exciting to meet other entrepreneurial spirits and help our state.
If you’ve never gotten involved with a software, analytics or business competition, it’s like nothing you’ve ever tried before (in a good way). Take a chance! See you at the FACTORY on Wednesday, February 20th for the kick-off, where they will announce the 2019 Challenge Statement and the new competition track! Get more information and register here.
