Winning Team Updates Q&A

We recently connected with a couple of last year’s Go Code Colorado winners to find out what they’ve been up to the last few months. Not surprisingly, they’ve already accomplished a lot.

Foodcaster: Better Locations for Food Trucks

foodcasterBy combining pedestrian foot traffic and cellular service state data sets with food truck parking regulations, Google Maps, Twitter social and Facebook events data, Denver-based Foodcaster set out to help food truck owners find their optimal locations. One of Foodcaster’s founders, Jun Heider, gave us this update:

Q: What have you been working on since the final event?

foodcasterwebimgA: We got our legal entity up and running, which was a huge learning process. We’re glad we had a good lawyer and guidance from the Go Code Colorado team to hold our hand through the process. After that we started planning our actual beta release.

After feedback from the community we realized that it would be best to target Android in addition to iOS, so we started looking into using something like NativeScript. Since then we had a very insightful mentoring session with the AT&T Foundry, which resulted in a pivot toward going the mobile web route.

So that’s what we’re up to now: reworking our iOS app as a mobile web app to allow us to reach multiple platforms and keep our version maintenance costs down. At least we get to keep the backend service we built during competition!

Q: Where would you like to see your company a year from now?

A: We want to be at least in public beta within the next 6 months; a year from now we’d like to have a good group of paying customers in the Denver metro area. From there we plan to branch out to other markets.

Regulation Explorer: Simplified Planning for Oil and Gas

regulation-explorer-logo-copyFort Collins-based Regulation Explorer is streamlining the permit process for energy companies by providing a full picture of options before they invest heavily in well locations. The team drew from more than 16 publicly available datasets to build their app. Here’s what Regulation Explorer team leader and GIS expert Emily Hueni told us about their progress:

Q: What have you been working on since the final event?

A: The coders have been busy updating our application to ensure the best user experience for regexp-webimg our clients; it’s now cleaner and faster. We’ve partnered with DigitalGlobe so that our app has access to high-quality, up-to-date imagery basemaps, and we’ve also updated our landing page and written several blog posts. The rest of our team is busy with business development and with strategy and market research.

Q: Do you have any big milestones coming up that you can share?

A: We’re currently seeking out early users to test our product and provide us with feedback. Several companies have expressed interest, and we’re optimistic that we’ll enlist early users in the near future.

Q: Where would you like to see your company a year from now?

A: We would like to have obtained our first round of customers. We also have ambitions of expanding our services geographically to all of Colorado, and possibly cross-industry.

Hively: Improved Hiring Practices

hivelyUsing employment-by-industry and occupational employment statistics datasets as well as datasets from a list of business entities, Hively helps businesses make better hiring decisions by matching employee personalities with business cultures, thus preventing “hire’s remorse.”

The Hively team, based in Colorado Springs, has been busy developing their platform and finding ways to connect with businesses and job seekers. They’re also building up their database of potential hires through a two-minute employee personality quiz that asks users to rank the importance of work-related aspects such as making more money versus having more free time.

Innovators and entrepreneurs can develop amazing resources with open data; these are just a few examples of what creativity and collaboration can do. We’ll be sure to keep up to date with the winners as they reach milestones on their journey.
